    Archery at Sunway Pyramid

    Hello everyone!

Hope it has been a great week for you all.
It's a busy work week for me so far. Thursday's public holiday in Malaysia helped out a bit, allowing me to catch up on some sleep.

Anyway, it was Good Friday on Friday 21st March 2008, so its a public holiday in Singapore.
My primary school and secondary school friend Terence happened to come down to KL for the long weekend holiday (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). Hence, we met up during Saturday for lunch and half a day of fun.

After lunch, we played 2 rounds of bowling. Normally we would play more rounds, but Terence said that the bowling balls at Sunway Pyramid have all been changed, and the holes are surprisingly small for the normal 10 pound balls. His hand wouldn't fit into the holes properly, so he had to use the 12 pound ball, which made him change his mind about the usual 3 or 4 games.

Then we stumbled across an archery range, which was just beside the bowling centre.

    Although the picture looks empty,
there were actually a lot of people who play there.
I just waited for a good time to take this picture.

It seemed like fun, so we decided to give it a shot. It'll was cool to be Robin Hood for a while.
Rates were RM9 for 12 arrows (1 person), and RM16 for 24 arrows (2 persons). Since there were the both of us, we decided to go by the RM16 package.

The funny thing was that, the receptionist told us that the package for 2 persons was 12 arrows per person. But they gave us more than 12 arrows each. Perhaps a miscalculation by the staff. BUT HEY, it works for us! Haha....

The arrows heads are kinda blunt, and not sharp. Probably just a safety issue. At the other end of the arrow, there are 3 plastic fins, which were supposed to be feathers (in those real ancient times archers' arrows). One of them is red in color, while the other 2 were yellow. There's also a plastic groove, for the bow string to fit into the back of the arrow.

The targets were not really far away, about 10 meters away.

Since it was our first time shooting, the assistants there guided us through our first shot.
    1) We had to stand with our feet positioned as on the floor foot guides.
    2) Mount the arrow onto the bow, and make sure that the red fin is always on the left, with the 2 yellow fins on the right.
    3) Close the left eye and aim with the right eye.
    4) Pull the bow until the right hand is almost at the right eye.
    5) Look at the arrow and ensure that the rear of the arrow is aligned and parallel with the head of the arrow.
    6) RELEASE and see what you've just hit.

Sounds pretty easy, but it can be quite taxing on the left hand (the one holding the bow), as it is normally the person's weaker hand and it has to support the weight of the bow as well (bow's weight probably close to 1kg in weight?)

And here are some pictures of us shooting!

Towards almost the end of our arrow shooting experience, I have began to feel my left hand aching from the weight of the bow, and both Terence and I began to sweat a bit, despite the place being air conditioned.

3 of my arrows missed the entire target. They just bounced off the wall and landed on the floor. Terence also missed a couple of them.
None of us hit the bullseye. I did hit 2 of the yellow inner circle. Terence fared around the same as me.
When our arrows were finished, we were still unsure about the total number of arrows we had. But that didn't matter, cause we certainly had fun, and felt that it was enough.
